Anatomy of an Outfit: LA Winter Edition
Qi cashmere hoodie (via Swirl)
Walter top (via Beyond The Rack)
Loeffler Randall shorts (via Swirl)
Napapijri wedges
Necklace from Pull My Daisy
Tarina Tarantino skull bracelet from Second Time Around
So, here’s a much more presentable version of me than the current reality. I oscillate between putting effort in to what I wear (accessorizing and the whole shebang) and totally not caring. These days, I’ve been living in my This Is What A Feminist Looks Like tee, jeans optional. (A very practical outfit for the task of shipping hundreds of t-shirts in the span of a week.)
I’ll be returning to California at the end of March for a feminist-related event. (Wanting for the confirmation before I announce what’s happening.) Totally can’t wait to throw shorts on again!

Okay, okay, so this costume is a Japanese school-girl-loving Asian fetishist’s dream. But whatever. Hello Kitty LOVES Halloween and I LOVE Hello Kitty.
I may have a slight addiction.

This Is What A Feminist Looks Like Without Airbrushing
A commenter wrote recently that I looked a little airbrushed in my More magazine photo. While I don’t know how little or how much photo-shopping went on behind the scenes, here’s a picture I snapped of myself a few days ago in Harvard Square. For reference, I didn’t shower that morning, hadn’t (and still haven’t) shaved my legs in weeks, wore no make-up, and didn’t brush my hair. Pretty, uh, natural. My outfit was also a far cry from the $1,445 wardrobe More provided me for the shoot:
D&G denim jacket (thrifted from Second Time Around)
Rebel Yell tank ($25 from Plndr)
Jane Norman military shorts (£28 online/found at random boutique this summer in Europe)
Tom Tailor studded boots (not very pricey/found in Germany)
This is a feminist in the wild. Compare and contrast away!

Had to share these recent acquisitions, which exemplify the preppy/punky look I’ve been going for lately. Both items are from U.K. labels, so alas, I won’t be going back for seconds anytime soon. Probably better for my pocketbook anyway.

First, the preppy: I found these military button shorts by Jane Norman at a store in Germany that carries British brands. They fit like a charm and are tight in all the right places without revealing booty. They’re a bit expensive for shorts, but the H&M version (which I also have) is the same price and these are much better quality.

Second, the punk: Superdry’s “Rocker Pirates” t-shirt has displaced Hellz Bellz as my favorite casual top of the moment. The cracked screenprint gives it a vintagey look and the cut is super flattering. I’ve encountered Superdry at boutiques before but hadn’t gone to one of the stores until I was in Cambridge/London last month. I always thought they were Japanese, but they’re actually a British company inspired by Asian design. The brand strikes me as kind of Abercrombie-esque but without the beachy feel. Brits, feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

Obviously, these two items combine well, but the rest of my closet is still rather mismatched. Do you guys have to negotiate between competing facets of your personal style?
