In Which I Spend 20 Consecutive Hours Traveling

Remember that time I lost all my IDs, cash, and credit cards in Greece and then got stranded in Paris en route home from spring break? The last 24 hours beat that.

The gory details are on Twitter but here’s the nightmare in full: I started traveling at noon in Boston on Monday and I only just got to Osnabrück three hours ago. Due to “Schneechaos in Frankfurt”, my three-leg journey was seriously derailed. Frankfort Airport shut down last night so my flight from D.C. was delayed by three hours, which led to missing my connection in Frankfurt, which ended up being canceled anyway.

When my bleary-eyed self realized this upon arrival, I decided that it wasn’t worth it to wait among literally thousands of other passengers stranded in Frankfurt. The line at the Lufthansa rebooking counter stretched into the food court and by my estimate, contained no fewer than 150 people. I was not about to wait 90 minutes just to get face time with a ticket agent.

And so, I high-tailed it out of there, sans checked luggage, to hop on the next train to Osnabrück. I’m now warmly tucked into bed with Hamlet, but my suitcase, as far as I know, is in transit somewhere in Germany. Whoops.

Leave it to me to fly out of the American city least prepared for snow and into the European city least prepared for snow on the day after epic blizzards. Since I’ve been awake for over 24 hours at this point, in part because I was terrified of passing out and missing my stop on the train, I am long overdue for the nap I’ll be taking right about …. now.

    Good night, world.

Update: If emails and Twitter replies are any indication, I’m not the only one with nightmare travel stories. Do share yours in the comments! Let’s commiserate.
