My IUD piece is currently syndicated on Yahoo! Shine. There are a lot of personal anecdotes in the comments section about people’s experiences with IUDs, some positive and some very, very negative. I personally know of 5-6 friends who have IUDs and none had any problems, but it might just be that we have access to better care given university hospitals. If you’re figuring out your birth control options, take a look at the experiences other women have had and determine if the potential (but rare) side effects are worth it. I know that this is much better for me than the Pill and it’s even eliminated my period.
As a side note, I noticed that one Yahoo! commenter wrote:
No doctors anywhere in my area for hours around will insert the IUD because they say it may cause infertililty and I haven’t had a child yet. I want one very badly but what am I to do when I am being told no by everyone? I think this is wrong and doctors should not be able to decide what I do with my body.
It horrifies me that some medical professionals are this ignorant about reproductive health. The IUD does have a slight risk of infertility, but only if you contract a STI, leave it untreated, and develop pelvic inflammatory disease. In other words, you have to be completely negligent to become infertile.
If I were this woman, I’d go to a place like Planned Parenthood.
