For further discussion of the Wellesley incident, check out Jezebel, which picked up the story today.
Commenters on Jezebel and my own site have pointed out that Pham’s outburst may have stemmed from his being teased or romantically rejected because of his height. While I don’t think this excuses his behavior, I know firsthand how difficult it can be to feel singled out or ostracized (I was bullied relentlessly in middle school). That being said, I can’t imagine that Wellesley students would engage in active bullying, nor do I think that the administration would tolerate it. More likely, Pham probably dealt with the type of whispers and behind-your-back sneers that I experienced while writing Sex and the Ivy during my sophomore and junior years. Which sucked, but hardly justifies the sending of a hateful screed indiscriminately attacking an entire group of people. If I didn’t snap into man-hating mode after my classmates circulated nude photos of me, then Pham has no excuse. Period.
