Today @ Harvard: Stupak Amendment & Interracial Dating
There are two great events happening on campus today, but unfortunately, they coincide with each other. I’m speaking at the interracial dating panel, so I’d love to hear in the comments from anyone who attends the other event on the Stupak Amendment.
A Workshop on Emergency Organizing Strategies with IOP Fellows Gina Glantz and Kim Gandy : A look at responses to the anti-choice Stupak amendment
Eliot House Memorial Dining Room, 4:00pm
A message from Gina Glantz:
When I titled my study group Organizing for Power: Turning Passion into Policy I had no idea that a real-time issue would arise that would fuel my passion and create an opportunity to share my expertise in the most of practical ways - planning an organizing drive. The passage of this weekend’s health care bill with the Stupak Amendment which, in effect, will deprive millions of and women of full reproductive health coverage including some who currently have abortion coverage those who will seek coverage through the “exchange” has sparked anger, dismay and alarm across the country. How those feelings are conveyed to the Senate as it deliberates its version of health care will be key to the fate of Stupak in the upper house.
I am convinced that an outpouring of campus emotion around this issue could affect the outcome of the Senate deliberations and the White House attitude. I know it is short notice but if you can make it to the planned workshop, Emergency Organizing Strategies, at 4 p.m. at Eliot Memorial Dining Hall I promise you that Kim Gandy (former President of NOW who I am delighted has been able to change her weekend plans so she can attend) and I will outline strategies that you can use in this instance and beyond. Plus, we will not leave the room until those of you who want to take action on Stupak have decided upon a real plan of action.
I thank you for your passion. Let’s join together and start a movement.
Asian American Awareness Week: Interracial Dating Panel
Lowell House Junior Common Room, 4:30-6:00pm
Sponsored by HAPA and SAA, this event will feature 6 discussion leaders who will share some of their experiences and reflections before we break into groups to discuss anything and everything about interracial dating.
At a school as diverse as Harvard, interracial dating is quite common. Do you think there are benefits to dating outside your race? Are their drawbacks? How do various groups within the Asian community reconcile historical or political stereotypes and prejudices with interracial dating? What will your friends and family think? Or is it not different at all? What’s the deal with “yellow fever?”
Come and discuss these questions and more while enjoying some delicious Finale’s cakes and pastries!
