I saw many a castle last summer in Germany (literally every major city has one), but my favorite aspect of the typical palace tour is always the garden. Hellbrunn is no exception. The gardens, unlike the fountains, are open to the public and extend into a large park where you can find a playground and the original pavilion from The Sound of Music, which was presented to the city of Salzburg as a gift.
Take note: the Schloss Mirabell, also featured in The Sound of Music and located in Salzburg city center, boasts more impressive botanical life and is the nicer garden of the two. At the very least, you don’t have to deal with the slapstick tour included in your entrance fee to Hellbrun.
(My dress, which fits in remarkably well in this photo, was purchased for just $25 at Forever 21. I call it my “desperate housewife” outfit.)
