Without minimizing the tragic circumstances of the recent spate of suicides among gay youth, Newsweek’s Jessica Bennett reminds us in the above article that bullying and harassment have always been problems in the queer community. It’s just that until now, the consequences (i.e. depression, substance abuse, suicide, etc.) haven’t been covered by news outlets or the kids who were killing themselves weren’t overtly “out”. In other words, all of this recent attention is long, long overdue. Anyone who’s worked in queer advocacy has been aware from Day 1 that bullying is one of the biggest issues confronting gay youth.
And while I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing that there’s more media coverage of the topic today, I do hope that once this stops being a trend story and the subject of morning show discussions (as it inevitably will), people don’t automatically assume that the problem is over. This problem has always been here and will continue to be here as long as our society promotes normative gender roles and sexuality.
