I don’t expect poor people to prove to me, a Harvard grad, that hunger and poverty are widespread problems. And if someone asked me, as an Asian person, to “prove” to them that racism exists, I would laugh all the way back to Chinatown. Marginalized groups are not responsible for explaining their marginalization to you. If you are actually concerned, you would take the initiative to do some research yourself instead of showing up at some oppressed group’s door step demanding a list of citations for things (racism, sexism, etc.) that are proven time and time again in the real world.”

I like this quote, but I’m a little irritated to see it going around Tumblr without correct attribution. The link from “word” above does not link to the source of this quote. In fact, this is part of a piece by Lena Chen called “The Patriarchy Wants A Lesson On Privilege 101”, found here at her blog The Ch!cktionary.

It might seem silly for me to get annoyed about this, but especially given that she’s a young, female, minority writer, it irritates me to see her not get the credit she deserves. I also really enjoy her writing about sexuality issues as well as race and class- she’s written some things I found extremely moving and necessary regarding how she, a Harvard grad, deals with acknowledging her own privilege.

I'm Lena Chen, a writer and media producer who's been called a "skank" (by Bill O'Reilly) and "a small Asian woman" (by The New York Times). My favorite part of my workday is the hate mail.

I got started blogging as an undergrad at Harvard, where I started the infamous Sex and the Ivy blog. My life and my Google results haven't been the same since.
