Anonymous asked: I just wanted to tell all those who are thinking of getting an IUD- it's not just the initial insertion that can be painful.. I had moderate to severe cramping for 3 weeks after insertion! I went to 2 doctors and got an ultrasound just to find out that this was my body's reaction to a foreign object and is normal. There aren't many testimonies online about persisting IUD pain so for a solid week or so I was convinced I *must* be dying/deformed/infertile/infected/bleeding internally etc.

OKAY. Public service announcement of the day: if you experience cramping for weeks following IUD insertion, you are probably not about to depart this mortal earth or in danger of losing your ability to breed. But you probably should still check it out with your doctor.

FYI to those experiencing pain: there is also a very, very small chance of perforation. (This almost always happens during insertion itself and is therefore noticed by your ob-gyn.) According to Bedsider: “In rare cases, the IUD can work its way up, and into your abdomen. That’s called a perforation. That really doesn’t happen often, but if it does you would need a surgery to remove it. That’s why women are told to check for the strings: if you can feel the strings, everything’s probably okay.”

ALRIGHTY THEN. Enough scary uterine talk on hump day.
