    Advice on spinning?

I’m taking my first spin class this Thursday, and I’m pretty terrified. It’s supposed to be a great endurance-building exercise and is the most effective way to burn calories, but I’veĀ  heard that it can be a literal pain in the ass for beginners. Is there a way for me to minimize the impact on my bum without going out to buy those gel pads? I don’t know if I’m going to stick with spinning and really can’t bother with extraneous gym gear.

I’ll also be attending an introductory orientation before class, so I won’t make a total fool of myself, but if you have additional advice on how to avoid embarassment, let me know in the comments!

Update: It appears as if I must buy a gel cushion or risk a sore vulva. Where can I obtain an affordable one?

    1. likeafish answered: Take a gel seat for your first couple of classes and stick with it. Make sure you eat a lot of protein before you go and enjoy. Its the best
    2. akt11 answered: I teach spin and it take 3-4 classes to get used to the bike. Do what you can in class, don’t over do it/push yourself for the first couple.
    3. leilacohanmiccio answered: It will hurt horribly the first time, but it gets better!
    4. hollyhunt answered: Spin is loud, and will hurt your vulva in ways you didn’t know bikes could. As a runner, you might really enjoy it!
    5. carolynannahall answered: When I first started I bought full length skins (skins.net/au/en/H…) and they really helped. No pain in the butt at all.
    6. closing-time answered: gain weight and put some cushion back on your tushy???
    7. likepolishingfirewood answered: seriously? you’re not going to be able to move the day of your flight. good job. I’m making your ass walk everywhere.
    8. lovecity answered: keep your abs tight so your body wont bounce when you sprint/spin really fast. aka this reduces pain in the bum
    9. derbygirl answered: If you like it, check out nashbar.com for super cheap bike shorts. Your ‘gina will thank you.
    10. vivresavie answered: I agree with fishy, and I used to be totally gymphobic. I’m addicted now—nothing else measures up when it comes to exercise!
    11. danielac answered: Get something for your crotch. Spinning hurts. also be careful about hitting your legs on the middle of the bike, I got horrible bruises.
    12. retromodernelle answered: I love spinning! I don’t think there’s much to be done re: butt soreness, but just listen to your body and don’t push too much the first time
    13. fek answered: bring a fuckload of water
    14. desalmada answered: gawd those bikes raped the fuck out of me. seriously, get one of those pad things for the seat.
    15. fishy answered: Don’t bother with butt pads. you get used to it after the first class or two. spinning is fantastic! hard work, but so worth it.
