How To Get Into Harvard College: Tips From An Ivy...
The most frequently asked reader questions I receive (and the ones I am least qualified to answer) are the following:
How did you manage to get into Harvard? Most people say that getting into the Ivies are a crap shoot for anyone. Did you have awesome stats? Valedictorian? 1600 SAT? Save African orphans during your free time? Do you have any tips or strategies?
Hi, I know this is such a...
Anonymous asked: Hi Lena,
it seems to me that you are always on the move. Have you considered taking up a job abroad? I am asking because soon I'll be leaving Germany tu study soc. abroad and I wonder if i will (should?) come back or stay or move further on. What are your thoughts about mobility, 'home sweet home', study and/or work?

Anonymous asked: First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on graduating! I def. find you an inspiration somewhat, since I plan on majoring in Sociology and minoring in Gender/Women's Studies. I'm just wondering: what was it like? Did you ever find yourself doubting the usefulness of graduating with a Sociology degree? What kinds of jobs are you planning to pursue? I only ask because while I love the two, I'm...

Hello, My Life Is A Mess
SO. I left for Europe a little over two weeks ago and I have literally not spent more than five days in one place. I’ve kind of been going mad with all the unreliable Internet and endless, EIGHT-HOUR car rides (I have had three of these, not kidding) and general lack of privacy or time to think. Also, I already broke the heels on two pairs of shoes and all my clothes are wrinkly because I...

If Hamlet were a little brighter ...
… then he could be my unpaid intern and I wouldn’t have to worry about pesky things like child labor laws.

Anonymous asked: You usually refer to Hamlet as your puppy, but I remember that he was originally Patrick's dog. Did you adopt the cute little guy?

Anonymous asked: As much as I think the person who called you "long winded and boring" was rude, I have to agree in part. Much of your writing could stand a serious edit.
Don't believe me? That's okay. Just my opinion. But personally, I find that your shorter pieces are more entertaining, more intelligent, and more readable. Consider it.

Blogcation
I’m going to Rome, kids! I’ve technically “been” in Italy via boat and skis, but never actually on foot. This will be an exciting, Internet-less adventure, but I’ll have some queued-up posts* for y’all to enjoy.
No flame wars while I’m gone, kay?
* Mostly just photos of Hamlet. Life is easy when you have a cute dog.

ashleybethard asked: Lena, I've been a fan and follower of your blog for some time now, and in light of sickening news, I'd like to know: what do you think about the "sanctioned genital mutilation at Cornell"? I mean, how could something like this happen? I'm also interested in the backgrounds of the young girls who underwent this procedure — for example, their socio-economic...

Sexist Beatdown: "The Chat They Didn’t Want You to... →
I am loving the latest Sexist Beatdown (entitled “The Chat They Didn’t Want You to Read! Edition”), in which Amanda Hess of The Sexistand Sady Doyle of Tiger Beatdown discuss why it’s not cool to play Blame The Victim when someone’s sex tape and/or racy photos get leaked.
Okay, so maybe I’m a teensy bit biased because Sady calls me “sharp” and...

I'm Alive!
And currently in Switzerland after the worst car ride ever. (Murphy’s Law was in full effect - ran out of gas, had to get bailed out by the German version of AAA, Roomie nearly went blind in one eye and had to seek optometrical assistance in Frankfurt.)
Also, of my first 48 hours in Europe, 18 of them were spent in a car. Not joking.
Behind on email and work, thanks to the lack of...

Boston Pride NOW →
Random factoid: despite having lived in the Boston area for FIVE years, I have never actually managed to make the annual Pride festivities.I’m so lame for missing this once again, but if you’re in Boston, the Parade is happening right about … NOW. So go! Here’s the schedule for the rest of the weekend.
Some European cities schedule Pride for July, but alas, Berlin’s...

Who Does The Queer Agenda Represent?: A Mini-Rant
As regulars on this blog might know, I often point out that feminism’s lack of inclusivity and its historical apathy toward marginalized women has hurt the movement and is something that this generation needs to actively work against. Over the past year, I began to feel the same way toward the Queer Establishment, whose emphasis on obtaining marriage equality and repealing Don’t...

Desiring Just Economies / Just Economies of Desire →
I’d really like to attend this academic conference in Berlin, but it is 1) already closed for registration and in waiting list mode, and 2) taking place about a week before I actually arrive to Berlin.
Boo.
But! If any readers out there are interested (and in Berlin — where a surprisingly large number of you seem to live!), the three-day event looks like it will be entirely in...

Anonymous asked: Hi, I noticed that many Asian girls feel that they are getting stared at when they're in Europe. I always find it strange when I read this on blogs, because I live in Belgium and I've never noticed anyone staring at Asian girls, and I can't imagine that this is so different in Germany or France for example. Do you feel your getting stared at when you're in Europe?

It's kind of telling ...
…that when I have a tech issue (as I did about five seconds ago), I instinctively call out, “Honey?!” Even when Patrick is not in the room or even within a mile radius.
So, let it be known: this man is the only reason why I backed up my data before my hard drive crashed last month. He is also the only reason why we have functioning wireless Internet, a sound system, and a...

Make "How To Lose Your Virginity" Happen!
Therese Shechter, one of the speakers at the Rethinking Virginity conference, just launched a massive fundraising campaign for “How To Lose Your Virginity”, her upcoming documentary. The trailer for the film is already being screened in human sexuality classes, and the companion blog, The American Virgin, has become a popular source for commentary on chastity, pop culture, and...

Hey New York Readers!
Heading out in about an hour for New York with the Roomie and the Bestie and the Doggy in tow. We’re staying in Williamsburg, where I shall frolic among the indigenous people known as “hipsters”.
I’m staying until Monday or Tuesday, depending on whether I end up making a random appearance in a pilot for the CW (don’t ask). This also depends on how much work I need to...
