Redeeming Aspects Of Writing A Thesis On Sex
I just used the term “anal virginity” in my thesis in a completely legit way. I cannot wait to find out which tenured celebrity scholar is going to have to endure these 80 pages of hymen-busting, leg-spreading goodness. UPDATE: I really, really, really hope that whoever gets assigned to me actually reads this thing. Because I just cited Anal Cherry Busters (2005).

Citation Humor: A New Level of Lame
Me: I never knew what "ibid." was until I started writing my thesis.
Jason: Um, really? I learned about it in the tenth grade.
Me: I just figured if this "ibid." dude were so important, then I'd know who he was.

Remember That Time ...
… when I celebrated my first (and thus far, only) anniversary with Patrick by reenacting our first date? Yeah, that’s not going to happen again tomorrow. To commemorate the second year of our unholy union, we will probably order delivery and hide out from the “wintry mix”, because anything more elaborate would require that I get out of the sweatpants and jersey to which...

The Five Types Of Haters Female Bloggers Encounter...
Following up on my post about the disproportionate amount of hate directed at women who blog, here’s a guide to the five types of sexist comments that you’ll typically encounter as a female blogger. (Complete with real comments as examples!) 1. The Body Snarking Commenter. Examples: Your face is so ugly that your cat is more attractive than you. [link] I see in the pictures a...

Sex and the Spiegel →
Evil Daystar, a German blog, concurs with my argument that Der Spiegel was sexist in their depiction of me. The recap: the German newsmagazine, which is considered progressive, described me in a mini-skirt, which 1) did not exist, and 2) served only to distinguish me from my sexually chaste counterpart. Granted, the male writer of the article definitely found True Love Revolution, Harvard’s...

College Abstinence Clubs in The Daily Report →
My American Prospect piece on the college abstinence movement was included in Friday’s edition of the Women’s Health Policy Report, which is published daily by the National Partnership for Women & Families. I’ve been a long-time subscriber to this amazing resource on women’s health policy and reproductive health, so the mention is very exciting!

Stormfront, White Supremacist Site, Doesn't Like... →
Ever wonder how neo-Nazis mobilize support for a Brave New Aryan World? Wonder no more! For reasons that escape me, there’s a libelous thread on Stormfront, perhaps the largest and most infamous of White nationalist forums, about my distaste for American conservatism and my shamelessly slutty ways. Apparently, in 2010, trolling is the new lynching, since we can’t simply beat the shit...

The American Prospect: "The Chastity Ring-Around" →
Want a preview of my thesis? Check out The American Prospect for my piece exploring the emerging college abstinence movement. There are fleeting references to the “hook-up culture”, marriage trends, anti-queer social conservatism, and feminism, all of which factor into my thesis in some major way. This is essentially the condensed version of the 80-page behemoth I must produce by...

Prop 8 Lawyer Accuses Psychologist Of Giving Money... →
I’m still 1-2 years away from actually being able to leave my country of birth, but this is why I cannot wait to get out of America: A Cambridge University developmental psychologist testified at a federal trial in San Francisco today that broad research has documented that children of same-sex parents are just as likely as those of heterosexual parents to be well-adjusted. “Studies...

Hating On Women Bloggers →
This is an oldie (but a goodie) from See Emily Blog, who writes in this entry about the vitriol directed at women bloggers, such as mommy blogger Heather Armstrong and me. (Confession: it blows my mind that someone would mention Sex and the Ivy in the same breath as Dooce.) Emily sums up the haterade on my blog like this: I constantly see some flat out disgusting and insulting comments thrown...

Can A Lingerie Party Be Feminist?
Or at least, not sexist? Or sizist? Or gender-normative? Last year, I was psyched that I had “finally conned someone into loving me”. Nowadays, the novelty has worn off. Since Valentine’s Day is this Sunday and I cannot plan more than three days in advance while in thesis-mode, I decided the best thing to do would be to skip the dinner crowds and … no, not do nothing...

Woo-hoo, it's my sexist German debut!  →
Der Spiegel hat einen Artikel über mich veröffentlicht! Aber nicht so schnell … Der Spiegel, one of the largest European newsmagazines, published an article about the American abstinence movement and feminist reaction to it. I’m pretty excited that I scored a mention/photo in a German publication, because all things German have become awesome since I’ve begun learning the...

Thesis, FML.
Trying to complete a thesis while maintaining minimal social interaction is not possible. Note the following: My friend Alex is staying with me for the week. My best friend from high school is in town today for 12 hours for a job interview. Yet another friend is in town on Thursday night. Sunday is Valentine’s Day/Chinese New Year. Also, I start an internship on Wednesday. Uh …...

I’m live-blogging from the Rethinking Sex conference at Harvard. Sponsored by the Love & Fidelity Network and True Love Revolution (the campus abstinence group), the conference was advertised with the following description: “Do what feels right.” “Just be yourself.” These are the most common pieces of advice young adults receive when approaching relationships....

Thesis Hell
I have less than six weeks to produce a thesis of 80-120 pages. I am seriously considering a self-imposed hiatus from blogging, Twitter, Facebook, and um, all of the Internet outside of JSTOR. This is what happens when you procrastinate. I’m putting myself on the 3-page-a-day regimen. If it doesn’t work out after the first week, Hamlet will surely exhort, “Get thee to a Widener...
